A Day Tour: Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Ubud, Bali is the center of Balinese tradition, culture and arts. Surrounding the town of Ubud are beautiful forests, mountains and rice paddies. The evidence of Balinese religion are evident in ancient and modern temples around town. Far from the crowded beaches and congested streets of Bali, Ubud is perfect  to those who would like to have a serene ambiance away from the city. Ubud is the heart of Bali, peaceful and calm.

I had a chance to meet a tour guide when I was staying in Blue Point Resort at Uluwatu. For a day tour from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, he charged me 600,000.00 IDR or 2000.00 PHP which I guess was reasonable and a tourist rate.

Goa Gajah

Goa Gajah or Elephant cave is a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site, an ancient Hindu temple built in the 9th century. The temple is still active, many Hindu worshipers visit the temple daily. A strange looking statue with an open mouth is an entrance door to the altars of Ganesh and Shiva. Inside is cold and dark, no artificial light and it is not spacious too. Ancient bath pools are found outside.

 Batuan Temple

Located in Batuan Village, Batuan Temple is a Hindu temple founded in 1020 AD. The locals looked after this temple for almost 1000 years. A well maintained temple with ancient relics. Temple visitors need to wear sarong before entering. Sarongs are provided at the entrance. Mount Batur

Indonesia has hundreds of active volcanoes and one of which is Mt. Batur. Located at Batur village in the district of Kintamani, Bali, a 30-minute drive from Goa Gajah. Mt. Batur is considered as a sacred mountain by Hindus. From the viewing platform, an amazing size and beauty of the volcano can be seen. There are plenty of souvenir shops around the viewing area. Restaurants with magnificent view of the mountain are everywhere. The place is a bit crowded though you can’t blame the crowd, the view here is breathtaking.

Bali Pulina

Bali Pulina is an interesting place. They grow and make their own coffee in a traditional way. They also have civet cats to produce the most expensive coffee in the world, the coffee Luwak or the civet coffee. Curious visitors are welcomed by staff with a step by step introduction on how they manually collect the civet dung and cook it in a traditional oven which is made of stone. Free 7 – 8 different kinds of coffee will be served to visitors after. While drinking coffee, you can enjoy the view and the ambiance of the place.

Tegallalang Rice Terraces

A regular rice terraces that captivated the hearts of many tourists. The view is relaxing since it keeps you in touch with the environment and tears you away from the crowded streets whichever city you came from. Good Balinese restaurants and souvenir shops are conveniently located in the area. The place is scenic and unique.

That composed my 1-day tour.  You might think that was not enough, yes, it wasn’t. There are so many beautiful places to visit. Unfortunately, points of interests in Bali are spread around the island. Traffic consumed my time, which unfortunately, if I want to see more of Bali the next day, the driver will charge me again for another day tour, obviously. I didn’t book for a next day tour. I didn’t get enough of how interesting and amazing the temples of Bali were, but of course, I didn’t want to spend my holiday money on tours. So I did a more exciting DIY ( Do It Yourself ) activity the next day. Kuta Beach has the most extreme sport around the area, surfing! And yes, surfing at Kuta Beach, Bali was my next bad ass activity.
