Discover Scuba Diving

It was a sunny day and the weather was perfect for an outdoor activity. Mactan Island is only 30 minutes away (if without traffic) from Cebu City. It is famous for its crystal clear waters, beaches and water sports. Swimming, banana boat ride, parasailing, snorkeling, sunset tour, yacht cruising and scuba diving are some of the activities to enjoy. This time, we chose to scuba dive at Kontiki Dive Resort.

How to Get to Kontiki Dive Resort (Mactan) from Cebu City:

Go to SM City Mall, take a van going to Lapu-Lapu City, if not sure which van to take, ask people around the terminal. Van fare is 30.00. From SM City, drop off H Mall and then take a tricycle. The resort is near JPark Island Resort and Waterpark. Tricycle fare is 8.00 pesos, but sometimes drivers charge more because of its location or take a taxi for convenience.

We patiently waited for our scuba instructor. Most of us were first timers, so we were quite anxious while waiting. Mixed emotions of excitement and fear are obvious in our faces since it was a new experience for us.

We started with safe diving instructions , basic hand signals, discussed about the gears and its usage. After we had an idea of what we are going to do, by pair, we plunged into the water. We learned the proper breathing technique, underwater hand signals and how to blow water out from the mask in case water gets in. After learning the basics, we started to swim deeper.

For first time divers like me, make sure that you are comfortable with the clothes or wetsuits you’re wearing. Once the diving gears are put on, make sure that it feels perfect on you, never assume that it is okay even if you feel uneasy because you are too shy to complain. Remember, you will be underwater for 45 minutes to an hour. Prepare yourself before you get into the water, you don’t want to panic. Once you panic, everyone who is with you in the dive should get out of the water too. Don’t worry the dive instructor will be assisting first time divers side by side. He is very patient and his assistant is supportive.

Before the dive, I was having difficulty breathing at first that I needed to get out from the water and relax. The rash guard and leggings that I was wearing were too tight, it was suffocating me. My breathing was difficult and my chest felt very tight. Plus the tank is heavy on my back. I needed to relax, so I changed to the most comfortable clothes I could wear, a t-shirt and shorts. While I was struggling, my friends were all good. I was the only one who had difficulty which was quite embarrassing, but no. It doesn’t matter, because I need to make sure that I am comfortable, regardless.

The dive we did was amazing. We are looking forward to more dives with them. The first time is always the hardest, but once you have conquered it, you don’t want to stop. Take it from me. 🙂

We had our own dive instructor who assisted us. Anyone can actually dive in Kontiki Dive Resort without paying an instructor from them, just pay 150.00 for entrance. Bring food for lunch if it’s a whole day activity. The resort’s food is ridiculously expensive.

The dive costs us 1,000.00 per person. It was a lot cheaper compared to other dive schools available around Mactan. We were provided with gears except for wetsuits.

Expenses:
Dive: 1000.00
Food: 150.00
Entrance: 150.00
Fare: 100.00 (return)
